Jewelry Wearing Mistakes

Jewelry Wearing Mistakes 1: Wearing too much jewelry.

In life, excess of anything is harmful. This is true for jewelry too. You want your jewelry to look prized and desirable. But when you wear too many jewelry pieces at once they cancel each other out. As a result none of them is able to stand out. The observing eye confuses and blends the throng of your jewelry into a single entity of gaudy jewelry.

Throwing on chunky bracelets, heavy earrings and ponderous necklaces along with other heavy accessories never works. You end up looking tacky and overdone. Too many attention seeking jewels render your efforts of coordinating the ornaments futile.

Try to achieve an understated elegant look with fewer pieces. Less jewelry pieces show more elan.

Pick a single statement piece that goes well with your attire of the day. It becomes the focus of attention. Keep the rest of your jewelry items simple and subtle. They should compliment your statement piece as well as your attire. Try to keep it minimal as well as simple. This will create the wow factor in the eye of the beholder.

Mistake 2: Wearing Noisy Jewelry:

Wearing noisy jewelry is as bad if not worse than wearing too much jewelry. Too many clunky bracelets on the arm clang and jangle. People get disconcerted and irritated.

Mistake 3: Not Wearing Occasion Appropriate Jewelry:

Don’t commit the gaffe of wearing jewelry unsuitable for the occasion on hand. Lavish gemstone necklaces and flamboyant chandelier earrings will look charming in a formal function. But they will look completely unbecoming during a Sunday brunch with your chums.

Correspondingly, chunky necklaces spice your casual tops to make them more interesting. However, they will look to be utterly incongruous in a ballroom.

A wedding ring, a watch, understated gold studs or tiny silver earrings with diamonds are all quite suitable in an office setting.

Not all pieces of jewelry are acceptable at all occasions. Reserve your elegant pieces and statement jewelry for special and formal occasions.

Jewelry Wearing Mistakes 4: Your Jewelry Does Not Match The Fabric Of Your Outfit:

Dresses can be formal, semi-formal or casual. They may also have been created for a sport event or swimming. Inevitably, each is tailored out of different fabric. And every fabric has its own attributes and traits. Your jewelry should go with the material of your outfit.

A denim top does not carry a diamond choker well. Nuggety beads harmonize better with denims. Wear a heavy stone or cork necklace on your heavy denims or bulky sweaters.

Similarly a chunky wooden bracelet will seldom do justice to an exquisite silk blouse. A few thin chains or a strand of pearls will look better. So take into consideration the type of your fabric while planning your jewelry.

Mistake 5: Wearing Too Many Statement Jewelry Pieces:

When you wear too many statement jewelry pieces, each ostentatious piece screams for attention. Result is that none of the pieces get attention. Also, you end up getting the wrong kind of attention. A heavy showy necklace donned alongside heavy chandelier earrings will not gel. Desist from doing so as it spoils the show.

Rather wear a single statement piece which will be the prime focus. Let all other pieces be fine and elegantly delicate. These accessories should play a sober supporting role and amplify the look of the centerpiece.

Mistake 6: Jewelry Metals, Gemstones, etc Don’t Match:

It goes without saying that jewelry is crafted using different materials. It can be made from platinum, white gold, yellow gold, silver or copper to name a few among many such metals. Further the jewels can be adorned by choosing from among a multitude of colored gemstones.

You should definitely mix and match. But at the same time, make sure that the various jewelry pieces are in harmony and strike a positive chord. An amber necklace will not look good beside diamond studs. You can use current trends as your guide. Or a skilled designer can help you coordinate the right materials.

Jewelry Wearing Mistakes 7: Jewelry Clashing With Your Body Type and Style:

Large bulky earrings make you look outlandish if you are smallish and petite. Likewise, smallish jewelry on a plus-size person strikes a discordant note.

Dainty light earrings look best underneath puffed up voluminous hairstyles. Large earrings with this hairdo will not look good. By the same token a restrained unfussy hairstyle warrants for flamboyant visible earrings. Your earrings and your hairstyle should always compliment one another.

If you have a warm skin tone, yellow gold will suit you better. Platinum and silver are more befitting for cool skin tones. Thus, it is important to also deliberate upon your skin tone while selecting jewelry.

No doubt, everyone has a favourite piece of jewelry. Don’t put on your favourite necklace everytime without consideration of the type of your outfit. Instead, match your necklace type and necklace length to the necklines of your outfit. It will make you look more interesting.

Being able to wear a jewelry piece confidently and comfortably is paramount. Always select a piece that you are able to wear with confidence. If you are uncomfortable or not confident about wearing a jewel, it will show clearly in your behavior and spoil your look.

Mistake 8: Wearing Dirty Jewelry

Anything unclean does not look good. Dirty jewelry is no exception to this rule. Other than that, dirt also causes tarnishing. Yet, wearing dirty jewelry is a surprisingly common mistake.

Your jewelry demands to be cleaned at regular intervals. A mixture of cosmetic products, dust and sweat keeps coating the jewels that we wear. Earring shafts and screws behind the ears are particularly prone. As a result, jewelry pieces lose their sparkle. It might also cause infection. Make certain that your jewelry is clean before putting it on.

“Clean your jewelry with toothpaste” is an oddly common refrain. DON’T DO IT. Toothpaste is an abrasive. It will damage and deplete the metal of your jewelry causing it to lose value. A good way is to immerse it in slightly warm water with mild and dilute dishwashing soap. Clean it with an ultra-soft tooth-brush. You can schedule a thorough cleaning of all your jewelry twice or thrice a year. Jewelry that is worn very often should be cleaned every fortnight or so.

Mistake 9: Using Unreliable Methods Of Cleaning Jewelry

Cleaning your jewelry is an inescapable task. But using incorrect methods to clean them will do more harm than good. As stated above, toothpaste is an abrasive that damages and depletes precious metal.

In like manner, baking soda too is harsh and erosive. It can harm and eat up metal or polish. This can erode the value of your jewel.

Using alcohol based cleaners on gemstones is also a strict no-no. Particularly so for porous gemstones like turquoise, opal and lapiz lazuli. And even more so for organic gems like pearls.

Consult with your local jeweller to understand the suitable non-harsh cleaning agents for your jewelry type.

Jewelry Wearing Mistakes 10: Wearing Jewelry That does not fit perfectly:

You should size yourself properly before buying any type of jewelry. Be it a ring, or necklace or bracelet or any other piece of jewelry, it should be a perfect fit. It should neither be too loose nor too tight. Tight fitting jewelry causes a lot of discomfort and makes you feel miserable. Loose fitting jewelry makes you feel the same besides creating the possibility of them falling off and getting lost.

Jewelry Wearing Mistakes 11: Wearing the same jewelry every day:

We are all very lazy by nature. As such, it is easiest to settle upon the same set of jewelry every day. You will have to kick this habit.

Learn to alternate between your jewelry pieces. Mix and match them to add variety and intrigue to your personality. Or risk the possibility of looking monotonous and boring.

Moreover, grime collects on oft used jewelry making it look dirty and lacklustre. Dirt can cause infections too.

Be creative. Have a look at your jewelry collection with curative eyes. Mix and match. Make the right investment. Add to your collection. If you are likely to receive gifts drop hints to your friends, relatives and loved ones as to what you would like to receive. Think out of the box. Make notes of what works from the compliments you get. Do whatever it takes. But add variety to the jewelry you wear.

Mistake 12: Wearing Your Jewelry While Swimming, Showering, in the Gym or While Playing Sports:

Jewelry pieces oftentimes slip off while showering or swimming and go down the drain. Gemstones take hard knocks and get damaged while in the gym or while playing. Chlorine in swimming pool water blemishes the metals and sullies the beauty of gemstones. Soaps and shampoos accumulate on and around jewels kept on while taking baths. So it is best to take off your jewelry and store them properly. Which brings us to the next bad habit.

Jewelry Wearing Mistakes 13: Not storing your jewelry appropriately:

Store your jewelry in cool, dark and dry places. Keep them away from moisture as moisture can tarnish jewelry. So no storing in bathrooms. Also, keep them away from air currents. Flowing air tarnishes metals faster. At the same time, air deposits a lot of dust.

Don’t throw all your jewelry in a common chamber. Jewelry will collide with, and knock each other causing damage. What’s more, chains get entangled with one another and with other jewelry pieces. Untangling is painful, cumbersome and detrimental. Softer gemstones become particularly unsafe in this situation. In addition, you won’t know what is where and lose a jewelry piece without even realising it.

Store your jewelry in allocated soft padded boxes. Preferably each jewel should have its own box. Pass your chains through good quality soft straws and clasp both ends outside the straw. If necessary, cut the straw to adjust size. Keep a well documented, organised and systematic inventory. This will eliminate friction, hard knocks and tanglement. You will also purge the possibility of losing a jewel or gemstone accidentally.
