Bulova Watches

Bulova Watches have a rich and immensely interesting history. In 1875, a young Czech immigrant named Joseph Bulova set up shop on Maiden Lane in Lower Manhattan, and a legendary American watch brand was born.

Bulova was trained as a jeweler. His expertise carried over into his watchmaking career, which began around 1911 with boudoir clocks and pocket watches. It soon evolved to include what was at the time one of the latest and most fashionable technological innovations: The Wristwatch.

Bulova is among the most successful and venerable names in the world of watches. An instantly recognizable term in the industry, Bulova makes watches in an extensive range of styles and prices.

The high end spectrum embraces the Bulova gold and diamond watches as well as the famous Accutron line of luxury watches. The economy series is represented by the Caravelle, (a well-liked line first introduced in the 1960s), and Sportstime watches.

The house manufactures classic and contemporary clocks and has a Miniature Collectible Clocks product line.

In 1919, Bulova unveiled the first full line of jeweled wristwatches for men. Over the course of time, Bulova added quite a few industry firsts, including the first ladies wrist watch line and the first line of diamond wristwatches.

During the following year, the company constructed an exclusive Bulova Observatory on top of the skyscraper in mid-town Manhatten. This Observatory was monitored by an expert mathematician. He took readings that were recorded on a chronograph situated in the lower floor of the skyscraper. This data was then used to set accurate time on all of Bulova’s timepieces.

Bulova perfected a new concept in the watch industry with total standardization of parts in 1923. Every part of a Bulova watch is made with such precision (standardized to the ten thousandth part of an inch) that it is interchangeable with the same part in any other Bulova watch. This revolutionized the servicing of watches in the industry.

The year 1926 saw another groundbreaking Bulova moment in American history: Bulova broadcast the first-ever national radio commercial, signaling the hour with At the tone, it’s eight o’clock, B-U-L-O-V-A Watch Time, an ad heard by millions.

Another pioneering horological innovation from Bulova was the Accutron technology. It used the resonating tuning fork as a means of regulating the time-keeping function.

Two years before Accutron was made public, the technology was used by NASA’s in its space programs.

Accutron set new standards in precision timekeeping. It represented the first major revolution in clock technology in over three hundred years.

Boasting of a degree of precision higher than any other commercially available watch, the Accutron was the first to be sold with a written guarantee of accuracy to within one minute a month.

Bulova introduced the Caravelle line of watches in 1963. Marketed in the lower price spectrum, the Caravelle was an attempt to contain the serious competition posed by Timex and other brands of cheaper watches. This was a successful attempt and Bulova was able to regain much of the lost ground.

The following years saw Bulova going from strength to strength.

In the meantime its relationship with NASA continued. Bulova produced timing instruments for critical NASA missions, including the first moonwalk on July 21, 1969. Its technology was also used during the ensuing space missions.

By the beginning of the 1970s, Bulova had sold nearly 1.5 million Accutrons, and the company’s watches could be bought in 110 markets around the world.

A joint venture was launched in 1971 with the Japanese Enterprise Citizen Watch Co., to make Accutrons for sale in Asia. By 1973, Bulova was offering four basic lines of watches covering different price ranges: the low-priced Caravelle, the slightly higher Bulova line, the still booming Accutron, and the Accuquartz, introduced in 1970 as the first quartz watch sold in the United States.
