Mens Jewlery can be enjoyed and flaunted by men as much as a woman can enjoy and flaunt her own. Here is a great collection of mens jewlery of fine quality and exceptional designs.

Men’s jewelry can easily add elegance and style to your personality if you know how to choose and wear them.

The fashion world of men’s jewelry is full of exciting trends to suit all tastes from casual to flamboyant and everything in between.

Though the number of pieces of mens jewelry is fewer in comparison to those available for women, the style, materials and choices available to men is vast.

Probably the earliest modern piece of men’s jewelry and also the most popular one is the watch. You can choose to get a wrist watchor pocket watch. Both types have spaces available for customization through engraving. Watches are crafted in a wide range of materials and nowadays come with a host of different functions & features.

Cufflinks are another great piece of masculine jewelry accessory. A wide variety of designs, patterns and metals used for crafting them give you ample choice to select a pair that suits your style and budget. You will also find cufflinks adorned with different stones and even pearls. Furthermore, use of enamel work lends beautiful colors to them.

Men’s wedding bands and wedding rings remain the traditional pieces of men’s jewelry. Until recently, most men went with a simple gold or silver band with no embossing or stones. But today, you can opt for styles that are bolder & flashier. Men’s rings come in a vast variety of styles with a mixture of metals, textured designs and adorned with sparkling diamonds.

Though gold remains the ubiquitous choice for creation of Men’s Wedding Bands, other precious and non-precious metals like stainless steel, carbon fiber, tungsten, tungsten carbide, silver and titanium are attaining acceptance for crafting this emblem of togetherness.

Usually, Men’s Wedding Bands are worn at all times and metals like tungsten, tungsten carbide or titanium are more suitable for daily wear as they have a good degree of hardness to withstand the daily grind. These metals are used in their pure form making them hypoallergenic meaning that they will not be allergic to your skin. But these metals are not as precious & exclusive as gold and platinum.

Yet another popular piece of men’s jewelry is the men’s necklace. You can choose a necklace to suit your own style from the great variety available. The simple & classic men’s necklaces crafted out of gold, silver or platinum are all time favorites and are suitable for both casual and formal occasions. If you desire a completely casual look you can choose a necklace made from wooden beads, hemp, rope, and shells.

Men’s Necklaces have a bolder look in contrast to those of women’s and are made to handle rough handling and wear. Also, they are heavier & have greater measurements.

The bracelet is another piece of men’s jewelry that is trendy. Men’s bracelets are worn by different men for different reasons. Some wear it as a fashion statement, some wear it to show off their affluence, some wear it to emphasize their masculinity or to attract the opposite sex, some might wear it as ID bracelets while still others wear it to show their solidarity to a particular cause.

Certain styles of men’s bracelets are created to be suitable for daily use and can be worn on all occasions. On the other hand, some bracelets are intended for formal occasions and go with formal outfits only.

Men’s bracelets can be made from gold, silver, platinum, copper, tungsten, brass, stainless steel, hemp, leather and even ceramic.

Earrings were left strictly to the women for a long time. But with changing times men want to express themselves more boldly in fashion. This has lead to the acceptance of men’s earrings as popular fashion accessories.

If are looking for a new set of cool men’s earrings then you definitely can’t beat the two most popular styles of earrings for men: hoops and studs.

Stud earrings appear to be hanging on the ear or earlobe without a visible connection. This is because they are invariably crafted on the end of a post, which pierces straight through the ear.

Hoop earrings are circular or semi-circular in design and appear similar to a ring. They are made of metal tubing, with a thin wire attachment penetrating the ear. The hollow tubing is attached to a very thin wire at the front of the ear, and slides in and out of the tube at the back. A different type of hoop design does not complete the full circle, but a thin post attached to the semi circle penetrates through the ear in a manner similar to the stud earrings.

Men’s necklace pendants are another fashion accessory for the sophisticated man who wants to exude charm and confidence. A well chosen pendant will add depth and personality to you necklace. Men’s necklace pendants tend to have a modern simplistic design.

Then there’s something you will need to keep your jewelry in its best shape. A men’s jewelry box will help to keep things organized & in one place. For easy access it can be kept on your dressing table. Large valet boxes capable of fitting in several accessories like bracelets, rings, watches, cuff links, etc are available for your convenience. Smaller chests are designed to hold rings, tie pins or other similar accessories.

The GIA Diamond Cut Grading System assigns one of the following five grades to describe the overall cut quality of a standard round brilliant diamond.

The cut grades namely are: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair And Poor.

Excellent

A diamond with an “excellent” cut grade reflects virtually all the light entering the diamond and thus creates extraordinary sparkle and life. It shows maximum of fire and brilliance.

Very Good

A diamond with a “Very Good” cut grade is able to reflect the major portion of light entering it. This also produces excellent fire and brilliance. Under normal lighting conditions, this diamond appears quite similar to Excellent Cut, but is available for a lower price.

Good

A diamond with a “Good” cut grade reflects a major portion of the light entering it which yields an above average appearance. This diamond offers an excellent value for money as compared to the above higher cut grade diamonds.

Fair

A diamond with a “Fair” cut grade causes a good deal of light entering it to leak out from its sides or bottom. This reduces both, fire and brilliance. Smaller diamonds weighing under .75 carats are able to get away with this cut grade as the differences in sparkle are not easy to perceive.

Poor

A diamond with a “Poor” cut grade causes most of the light entering it to leak from its sides or bottom. The diamond appears dull & lifeless, even to an untrained eye.

Mens Sapphire rings bestow a majestic masculine aura to the personality of the wearer. Sapphires rank a sturdy nine on the mohs scale of mineral hardness which is just a little below diamond. As such, sapphire ring is a good choice for men since Mens jewelry items have to undergo a much rougher handling.

Click On The Image Below To See An Amazing Collection Of Mens Sapphire Rings

Men’s Sapphire rings look great in yellow gold, white gold or a two tone combination of yellow and white gold. Also Sapphires come in all imaginable hues of the manly blue color which once again makes it a cool choice for crafting men’s rings.

Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September in the United States.

Synonymous with romance and royalty, Sapphire ranks among the world’s magnificent gemstones. The most common shapes for sapphires in sapphire men’s rings are cushion and oval shapes. Other shapes, including rounds, emerald cuts and trilliants are widely available in sizes under a carat.

While choosing a men’s Sapphire ring for yourself choose a sturdy design that will keep your sapphire ring in good shape over the long run. A ring of light metal weight will not be durable. Moreover, it can result in a weak gemstone mounting and you could end up losing the Sapphire gemstone itself.

If the sapphire is mounted in prong settings there is every possibility of the prongs getting pried open with everyday wear. A better option is a mounting of the sapphire bordered all around with gold. This will act as a shield against potential side impacts and also make certain that the gemstone does not drop off. The choice of mounting should take into consideration the depth of the gemstone too. All this means a heavier metal weight and a higher price.

Fourteen karat gold is more suitable for a men’s sapphire ring because of its innate hardness in comparison to gold of higher karat purity (it is also less expensive).

A man’s lifestyle being more vigorous, men’s sapphire rings need to be sturdy and have a good weight. But the strength need not come at the expense of style and craftsmanship. The ring should be finished to perfection.

Fine Sapphire is generally more affordable than comparable quality ruby, emerald and diamond. But the cost of a men’s Sapphire ring will depend on the quality of sapphire, the choice of setting, the ring size and its metal weight.

Sapphire, like its gem sibling ruby is the mineral corundum, which has a hardness of 9 on the Moh’s scale. Corundum is so tough that it is used as an abrasive. As a result, Sapphires are the most durable of gems.

Clean Sapphire with mild dish soap in warm water. Use a toothbrush to scrub behind the stone where dust can collect.

Mens Pinky Rings exude a masculine elegance that transcends race, creed and culture. From the status conscious American Blue Bloods to the British Aristocrats, from the fashion conscious show biz characters to car dealers, from the mobsters to the rap stars, even bankers and hedge fund guys, (the people you’d least expect), have all embraced the pinky ring as status symbols or fashion accessories.

Mens pinky rings add an element of surprise to your jewelry collection.

The custom of wearing pinky rings on the pinky finger (little finger) originated from the signet rings used earlier by royalty and aristocrats. The signet rings had a family crest or initials of the wearer engraved on the top. The bearers of signet rings pressed their distinctive seals to leave its mark on hot wax like a modern day stamp. It was used to sign and seal documents and worn on the pinky, an easy finger to extend.

Among the present day royalty Prince Charles chooses to wear a gold signet ring on his little finger.

In this day and age signet rings are largely ornamental pieces of jewelry and eye catching fashion accessories. Authentic signet rings of the past were ornamental as well as functional and had to be readily recognized as official. The engravers created a mirror image of the wearer’s coat of arms, initials or signature, so the seals when imprinted would not show a reversed image. However, modern signet rings are no longer used as official seals and so the engravings are not done in mirror image.

Pinky rings are also thought to bring good luck & are rubbed and turned by some gamblers like worry beads.

Notwithstanding all the speculations associated with them, the primary function of a pinky ring is simple: fashion. A guy who decides to wear a pinky ring is the one with polish and panache making a conscious effort over his look. Like a peacock spreading his plumage to attract the female of his species, this guy likes to accessorize and look good.

If you want to add a dash of vigor & daring to your style, you have a wide range of mens pinky rings from ovals and cushion shapes to shields or stone-set rings to choose from.

Mens pinky rings are available in platinum, yellow gold, white gold, sterling silver, palladium, titanium etc.

Gold pinky rings are available in varying degree of purities of gold like 10k, 14k and less often in 18k purity.

Mens pinky rings can come with ornate face encrusted with diamonds and other precious gemstones. Some flamboyant eponymous lines include elaborately carved signets with inlays of large stones like lapis in place of an engraved face.

Plain gold rings can be a good entry point for men reluctant about wearing jewelry. They can be subtle but still have that sense of masculinity to them.

Mens Emerald Ring brings good luck and enhances well being of the wearer. An Emerald, which is also known as “the stone of successful love,” provides sensitivity and loyalty to its wearers.

(Click On The Above Image To View An Amazing Mens Emerald Ring Collection)

An emerald ring captivates and lures men for many reasons.

The rich green of emerald is the color of spring season. As such emerald is an epitome of love and rebirth. Men, who love nature and greenery, fall in love with a mens emerald ring at first sight.

Emerald is a birthstone for the month of May in US. Mens emerald ring is an obvious choice for men whose birthday falls in the month of May.

Throughout history, the gemstone emerald has been treasured by rulers around the globe from the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan of ancient India (better known as the builder Taj Mahal) to the Monarchs of Spain and Cleopatra from Egypt. The royal association of the gemstone fascinates most men.

A mens emerald ring reflects magnificence and splendor, both, as a simple elegant solitaire emerald ring or as an intricately crafted custom emerald ring. The important decisions you have to take while choosing a mens emerald ring is about the quality of the emerald gemstone, the choice of metal for the ring and the ring design.

Quality of gemstone Emerald in The Mens Emerald Ring

Carat Size of The Emerald Gemstone In Your Ring

Though large emeralds of good quality are extremely rare, they are very valuable in any size. Particularly, the price of the emerald rises sharply above half carat size. Emeralds are priced per carat, and the price per carat increases significantly for larger stones. To site an example, a one carat emerald gemstone of superb quality may cost $1000. But a three carat stone of similar quality will not just cost three times i.e. $ 3000; but rather cost in the vicinity of $8000.

If you view the mens emerald rings on amazon.com, you will see that the sizes of the gemstone range from 0.5 carats to under 3 carats. Accordingly you can choose a stone size in this range based on your budget.

Color of the emerald gemstone in your Mens Emerald Ring

Among the four Cs (cut, color, clarity & carat weight) used to determine the value of all gemstones, color is the key attribute that determines the value of an emerald. The fresh vivid green color of the spring grass after a rain is the most valuable color in an emerald. The color is described as ‘emerald green’.

Typically, the finest color emeralds originate from Colombia. Pure green emeralds, like the ones found in Columbia are preferred over the bluish green emeralds from the African continent.

Slightly bluish-green, green-green, and slightly yellowish-green are all described as top colors. Slightly yellowish green appear warmer while the slightly bluish-greens feel cooler. But, you should avoid the gray or brown tints in general.

The marvelous green of the emerald conveys harmony, love of Nature and elemental joie de vivre. Pliny commented that green gladdened the eye without tiring it. Green is perceived as fresh and vivid, never as monotonous. The emerald subtly changes its hue between the bright sunlight of the day and the artificial light of a lamp retaining its lively vigor in all its nuances.

Clarity of the emerald gemstone in your Mens Emerald Ring

Inclusions occur in emeralds as a rule rather than exception. An inclusion free emerald would be very valuable, but at the same time it would make it suspect of being an artificial stone. Connoisseurs affectionately refer to the inclusions as birthmarks of the stone.

In case of natural emeralds, clarity is comparatively a less important factor in determining the value. It is certainly not as important as their color. Inclusions are so common that they are not believed to lessen the beauty and value of an emerald gemstone.

That said, good clarity is still a desirable attribute. The stone should be transparent and light should be able to play inside it. A gemstone with too many inclusions that does not let light to pass through should be avoided. Good emeralds may differ in transparency levels but will not be opaque.

Though flawless clarity is not necessary to make an emerald very valuable, an entirely opaque emerald is also not worth much. An emerald might be of the best color, but if it is totally opaque, it is not considered precious at all.

Since flawless emeralds are so rare, a few inclusions are unavoidable. You should however, make sure that the fissures and inclusions do not run too deep as they might weaken the stone and render it prone to breakage with accidental impacts.

Cut of the emerald gemstone in your Mens Emerald Ring

The inherent brittleness and the fissures present in emerald make cutting a challenging task even for the most skilled cutters.

A special cut known as the ‘emerald cut’ has been developed particularly for emeralds. The clear design of this rectangular or square cut with its beveled corners and step-cut optimizes and displays the beauty of this valuable gemstone. At the same time this cut protects the stone from mechanical strain. The cut is highly effective in general for colored stones since it promotes better reflection of light and intensifies the the play of color.

Emeralds are also commonly cut in other classical shapes like round, oval, pear and marquise. If the uncut raw has too many inclusions, it may be cut into a gently rounded cabochon. Due to their rich color emeralds look spectacular in a smooth domed cabochon cut.

Source of the emerald gemstone in your Mens Emerald Ring

Columbia is the most famous source of emerald & its most important producer followed by Brazil and Zambia. Emeralds from each of these countries have their own distinct characteristics.

If you are buying mainly or solely for color, Colombian stones have the best reputation. The emerald gemstones from Colombia are celebrated & prized for their shiny, vivid green color which is unadulterated by any blue tint. Their color is so prized that visible inclusions are accepted in these emeralds in return for the incomparable color. The rare Trapiche emeralds that have six rays emanating from the center also originate from Colombia.

Emeralds from Brazil are often available in larger sizes though their color may be lighter green than the ideal color. However, the finest Brazilian stones rival those of Colombia for color.

If clarity of the gemstone is your key concern, Zambian stones have fewer inclusions. Zambian emeralds with their dark rich, bluish green color are renowned for their exceptional clarity & crystalline appearance.

Other known producers of emerald are Afghanistan, Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Russia.

Choosing the precious metal for your Mens Emerald Ring

The type of metal used for crafting a mens emerald ring plays an important role in showcasing the beauty of the stone.

An emerald being incredibly beautiful and expensive, jewelers tend to couple it with expensive and elite metals like gold and platinum. Silver is just not believed to be in the same league.

The magical combination of platinum and emerald bestows an amazingly attractive look to the platinum emerald men’s ring making it the most elegant and exclusive ring of the bunch. The inimitable white of Platinum contrasts exquisitely with the vivacious green of emerald creating a completely captivating look.

The same result can be achieved at a reduced cost with whitegold. Though white gold is not as exclusive as platinum it is in a more affordable range making it a popular medium for crafting mens emerald rings.

Yellow gold adds cheerful splendor and shine to the ring. The bright yellow of yellow gold presents an eye pleasing dichotomy with the vivid green of emerald.

The purity of gold to be used also has to be considered while choosing a mens emerald ring. A lower karat value represents a lower purity of precious metal, reducing the value of the ring. High karat value, yields a softer material unsuitable for jewelry purposes.

Fourteen karat gold is harder, sturdier and more durable than eighteen karat gold. You have a choice between fourteen karat or eighteen karat rings but some designs are better made in fourteen karat gold. An emerald ring with elaborate design or engraving is better carved in 14 karat gold. The design remains tidy without fading out owing to the intrinsic hardness of the metal. Afterall, a men’s ring has to endure more wear and tear than a women’s ring.

Furthermore, a softer metal with higher karat purity can result in a weak setting of the gemstone emerald and cause it to fall off without your knowledge.

A ten to fourteen karat men’s emerald ring crafted in white or yellow gold will be fine but you should not cross purity above 18 karats.

The weight of the metal also has to be substantial to achieve the solid masculine look for the ring as also to provide a secure setting to the emerald gemstone.

Setting the emerald gemstone in your Mens Emerald Ring

Emeralds can be set in just about any other setting you’d use for most other stones. The type of mounting used will depend on the suitability to the overall design of the ring. It is also a matter of you personal or creative preference.

A prong setting is considered less appropriate for a mens emerald ring. Mens ring obviously have to endure a more vigorous treatment. The prongs are more vulnerable to getting pried open and the stone more at risk of falling off. Sensitive skin is susceptible to getting injured by the prongs if they open up. If at all prongs are used make very sure they are solid & secure.

Snaptite setting is not recommended for setting of emeralds as the snapping action might crack the stone.

A more suitable setting is the one in which the stone is completely and solidly bordered with the ring metal. The stone is protected and shielded from accidental side impacts in this type of setting. It also prevents any accidental dislodging of the emerald.

Routine treatments of the emerald gemstone in your Mens Emerald Ring

The tiny cracks or fissures that are so characteristic of an emerald are routinely filled up with oil or raisin to minimize their visibility. Cedar oil, having a comparable refractive index, is often used in this commonly accepted practice. The treatment known as fissure-filling or oiling is not permanent and the emerald possibly will require re-oiling.

Caring for and cleaning your Mens Emerald Ring

Emerald is the variety of the mineral Beryl which has a substantial hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. Even so, most emeralds are highly included resulting in brittleness and reduced resistance to breakage.

Moreover, most emeralds have been treated with oils. As such, you should not clean them in an ultrasonic cleaner or in hot soapy water or in steam as this may dislodge the oils making the inclusions more visible.

Clean your emerald in water at room temperature and use a really soft toothbrush to gently remove any accumulated grime. Cleaning should be completed quickly without prolonged exposure to water.

A mens ruby ring is an epitome of courage, passion and undying love. Men tend to like rubies above other gemstones because of their defiant dazzling colors. A darkly hued ruby ring is a great choice for any man who likes to assert his confidence in donning jewelry.

(Click On The Above Image To View An Amazing Mens Ruby Ring Collection)

Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July in USA.

Ruby, the supreme red gem was considered the most valuable of all gemstones for a long time. Deemed as the king of gems by sages of ancient India, ruby (like its gemstone sibling sapphire) is the tough and durable mineral corundum.

A mens ruby ring should be eye-catching and elegant. You should pay attention to important aspects like gemstone characteristics, type of mounting, shape of the ring etc and strive to attain a balance between good looks, good craftsmanship and long-term durability.

Quality of Ruby in The Mens Ruby Ring

Size of The Ruby In Your Ring

Men’s ruby rings tend to be broader and bigger. These rings usually feature a single large ruby as the centerpiece, often surrounded by smaller gems in more expensive models.

You too might think of selecting a larger gem. But ruby is an expensive gemstone. Large, high-quality rubies are the rarest stones of all gems, including diamonds. Since large rubies are so difficult to obtain, their value is substantially higher. Carat weight plays a huge part in determining the value of a particular ruby. A fine four carat ruby sells for much more than a four carat emerald, diamond or sapphire of comparable quality.

(Click On The Above Image To View details of this White Gold Oval Genuine Ruby Mens Ring)

Above and beyond, if you choose a ruby of larger size, it will have to be of the finest quality as the flaws, if any, become all the more visible in bigger gemstones. Clear and vivacious rubies of large sizes are virtually non-existent and the exorbitant price for such gems would be beyond reach for most of us.

Rubies are priced per carat (unit of weight). But when you compare the price of one large piece and one small piece of the same quality, the larger ruby would cost you much higher per carat in comparison to the smaller stone.

This means that you should either be prepared to pay the extravagant price of a good quality large stone or you should accept a few visible flaws in the gemstone. However, you should make sure that the stone has consistent color and is free from cracks or hairline fractures that could create larger problems over time.

You can also opt for a ring with a modestly sized ruby of 2 to 2.5 carats so that the quality is reasonably good and the cost is within reach.

Another option that you might like to think about is a type of setting where many small good quality ruby stones are closely set in a seamless design giving the illusion of a single large gemstone. Only a highly skilled craftsman will be able to carry out such detailed work with no space or gold (or other metal) visible between the small gems.

Source Of Ruby In The Mens Ruby Ring

Another fact worthy of note is that the area of origin of the ruby gemstone in the ring also affects its price. Burmese rubies are the most expensive. African rubies are moderately priced while Thailand rubies cost still less.

Accordingly, a ruby ring with a Burmese ruby gem is more expensive than a ruby ring with a gemstone of Thai or African origin. Your jeweler should clearly mention the origin of the gemstone in your ruby gemstone ring.

(Click On The Above Image To View details of this Yellow Gold Oval Genuine Ruby Mens Ring)

Clarity, color and origin together determine the price of the gemstone. However you need to keep in mind that, most rubies will show natural inclusions even when viewed with the naked eye. Clearer rubies can be very expensive. Just to give you an idea, a Burmese ruby that is a 7mm round piece, can be priced in the range of 1,500 U.S$ to even 8,000 U.S$ for a single piece.

Color of Ruby In The Mens Ruby Ring

The most desirable color for rubies is a deep, pure vivid red to slightly purplish red. A purplish red is in general regard better than orangy red.

Shape of Ruby In The Mens Ruby Ring

Oval and cushion shapes dominate larger rubies while the smaller ones are mostly cut into rounds or squares. The cut of the stone you choose is important to the appearance of that ruby, but it isn’t as important an indicator of value as the carat size, number of inclusions or the all important color.

Slight premiums are paid for round stones, while slight discounts apply for pears and marquises. Stones that are overly deep or shallow should normally be avoided.

Choice of Precious Metal for Your Mens Ruby Ring

Mens Ruby Ring can be set in many different types of metals like yellow gold, white gold, platinum or sterling silver.

A yellow gold setting makes the ruby appear brighter, making the red even more intense.

Metals such as white gold or platinum complement the stone and showcase the stone’s particular hue. The contrast between the light luster of the metal and the dark hues of the ruby set up a tasteful dichotomy adding to the appeal of the mens ruby ring. The same effect can be achieved with sterling silver at a reduced cost.

While choosing a precious metal material for your mens ruby ring, you have to take into account the purity of the metal. A lower karat value means a lower purity of precious metal in the alloy, lessening the value of the piece. High karat values, on the other hand end up in materials which are too soft for jewelry purposes.

(Click On The Above Image To View details of this Mens Ruby And Cubic Zirconia Ring In Sterling Silver)

Fourteen karat gold is harder than eighteen karat gold and is sturdier and more durable. You have the option of choosing between 14 karat or 18 karat rings but certain designs are better crafted in fourteen karat gold. A ruby ring with intricate design or engraving is better carved in 14 karat gold. The design remains tidy without fading out with friction in the long run because of the innate hardness of the metal. A mens ring undergoes more wear and tear as compared to a women’s ring.

Moreover, a softer metal with higher karat purity can result in a weak setting of the gemstone ruby causing it to fall off and resulting in its loss which would be most unfortunate.

A ten to fourteen karat men’s ruby ring crafted in white or yellow gold will be fine but you should not cross purity above eighteen karats.

Sterling silver, as a rule is 92.5% pure and is has a good degree of hardness but anything higher than this could be tricky.

Platinum as a ring material is strong enough to ensure that the ruby ring will be sturdy, safe and beautiful for years to come.

Other Gemstones in A Mens Ruby Ring

Mens Ruby Rings tend to feature a solo single large ruby as the centerpiece. They can also be seen surrounded by other smaller gems in more expensive ring models.

The gemstone ruby itself is very expensive and the heavier metal weight of a robust masculine ring adds further to the cost. As such, budget constraint is the primary consideration while deciding whether you want to add diamonds to your ruby ring.

If your budget permits a fine quality ruby as well as diamonds you should definitely go for it as diamonds would add glitter and glamour to your ring.

(Click On The Above Image To View details of this Mens 14k Diamond And Ruby Ring)

But it is not advisable to choose an inferior quality stone to accommodate diamonds in the budget. You should rather opt for the best possible quality solo gemstone and forgo the diamonds in such a situation.

You could also opt for colorless sapphires instead of diamonds. Like rubies, sapphires too belong to the mineral family of corundum. Corundum measures a sturdy 9 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness coming second only to diamonds. Colorless sapphires will make worthy alternatives to diamonds.

Gem setting in your Mens Ruby Ring

The type of mounting used for the mounting will depend on the suitability to the overall design of the ring. But a few points need to be considered for the setting. Generally a prong setting is deemed less suitable for a mens ruby ring. Mens ring naturally have to undergo a more vigorous treatment. The prongs are more susceptible to getting pried open and the stone more susceptible to falling off. Sensitive skin is also prone to getting injured by the prongs if they open up. If at all prongs are used make very sure they are chunky, firm and safe. A more suitable setting is the one in which the stone is completely and solidly bordered with the ring metal. The stone is protected and shielded from accidental side impacts in this type of setting. It also prevents any chance dislodging of the stone.

Ample metal weight is necessary to mount the ruby gemstone securely with sturdy prongs or gold border.

(18k-Yellow Gold Cushion Cut Ruby Mens Ring)

Caring for your Mens Ruby Ring

As stated above, rubies belong to the mineral family of corundum which measure a strong 9 on the moh’s scale of mineral hardness. In technical terms, a diamond is considered to be the hardest gem (measuring ten on the Moh’s scale), while rubies and sapphires come a close second as far as hardness is concerned. This makes them fairly sturdy and easy to maintain.

Ruby jewelry can be cleaned by soaking for a few minutes in warm water mixed with mild soap. A soft brush can be used to loosen dirt and grime if needed. Rinse under cool water thoroughly and dry with a clean soft cloth.

A very important point to be kept in mind is for rings with other gemstones along with rubies. Characteristics of the other gemstones should also be considered while caring and cleaning such a piece of jewelry. For example, an oil treated emerald would be completely ruined with prolonged immersion in water.

Enhanced rubies using glass and jelly fills should be cleaned in a different way and the vendor is expected to inform buyers regarding cleaning methods of such stones.

Open drain should be covered with a sieve while cleaning of jewelry or it may slip through down the drain.

Natural fancy yellow diamonds are a part of the exclusive group of extremely rare natural colored diamonds occurring in nature in myriad colors. As such, these yellow gemstones are themselves extraordinarily rare, exclusive and expensive.

The universal perception about a diamond is that of it being a colorless (or white) stone, and it is a fact that most of the diamonds you come across are indeed colorless. But a very small percentage of these gemstones acquire particular shades of colors depending upon certain sets of atmospheric conditions existing in the vicinity of the diamonds during their formative years.

How does a yellow diamond become yellow?

A diamond is nothing but a crystallized isotope of carbon. The majority of natural diamonds develop in the high pressure & high temperature conditions existing at extreme depths of 140 kms to 190 kms within the Earth’s Mantle. Carbon or carbon containing minerals provide the seed carbon source. The crystallization of the carbon (nothing short of a miracle) into a diamond happens over a period of hundreds of millions of years.

Purer the carbon seed and the more perfect the crystalline lattice structure, clearer and more colorless is the resulting diamond. However, the conditions in which a diamond develops are far removed from the ideal and sanitized conditions of a laboratory.

At times the crystalline structure of the diamond gets distorted by the immense pressure at those depths. At other times, the seed carbons source gets impregnated with impurities like nitrogen, boron or hydrogen and many a times both the above factors occur together. Depending on the type of impurity (or crystalline distortion), the resulting diamond absorbs certain spectrums of light and reflects others. We perceive the color of the diamond based on the reflected spectrum of light.

The most common impurity element found is nitrogen. Nitrogen atoms have an unequal number of electrons than carbon. When both of them bond, one of the nitrogen electrons remains unattached. These free electrons in orbit around the nuclei partially absorb blue & violet light wavelengths. The wavelengths which are not absorbed appear yellow to the human eye thus giving the diamond its yellow coloration.

Overall, natural colored diamonds are extremely rare. However, among the elite group of natural colored diamonds, yellow diamonds are the most common. So much so that among the 100 largest diamonds in the world, about one third are yellow, with the most famous of them being The Kimberley Octahedron, weighing massive 616 carats.

Natural fancy yellow diamonds should not be confused with the transparent (or white) diamonds of inferior quality which also happen to appear pale yellow on account of presence of trace nitrogen impurities. The color grades of white (transparent) diamonds range from D to Z. Grade D diamonds are the whitest/clearest and most valuable, while grade Z are tinted with faint sickly yellow to brown and are least valuable in comparison.

However, a diamond with stronger yellow going beyond the Z color grade confers the coveted fancy yellow grade upon the diamond. Such a diamond is highly sought after by the celebrities, the royalties, the fashion forward, and the jewelry designers. The diamond becomes pretty expensive and goes beyond the reach of most of us.

As the diamonds become progressively darker yellow in color, they are given their own separate color grades as follows: fancy light yellow, fancy yellow, fancy intense yellow and fancy vivid yellow (also known as canary yellow).

Like all colored diamonds, the deeper and more intense the yellow in a yellow diamond the higher the value of the diamond will be. A tiny .25-carat yellow diamond can be priced as high as 10,000 dollars depending on its clarity and cut. Larger 6 carat Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds have been sold for as high as $57.000 per carat.

All yellow diamonds look more intense once set in yellow gold

Similar to white diamonds, the 4C’s namely color, cut, clarity and carat are the factors that need to be considered before choosing a yellow diamond. With Colored Diamonds, Clarity is not as important as Saturation of Color and their prices depend on saturation of color. A diamond must be certified by a gemological laboratory to be called natural.

Radiant and cushion cut work well with large, yellow diamonds because of their predisposition to hold color well. Using one of the round cuts has been known to lower the intensity of color by a full grade in certain cases.

The Argyle mine in Western Australia is the most prolific producer of yellow diamonds followed by diamond mines in South America and South Africa. Around one in every 1000 diamonds mined is a fancy colored diamond.

Occurrence of a natural vivid yellow diamond is even rarer. Natural intense fancy yellow diamonds are so rare that most jewelers have never seen one, and might never own one.

Diamonds Inclusions

A diamond responds to incident light in three different ways. It allows a portion of light to pass through itself; it reflects another portion and refracts yet another portion of the incident light within itself. This dispersion and refraction of light is what makes the diamond sparkle.

When the path or wavelength of incident light is obstructed or diverted, the play of light does not occur. Depending on the size and type of the obstruction, this can impart a dull and lifeless look to the diamond.

Such obstructions are caused by flaws of the diamond that may either be internal or external or both. External flaws occurring on the surface of the diamonds are called blemishes while internal faults occurring within the crystalline surface of the diamond are known as inclusions.

Inclusions are acquired naturally by diamonds during their formative years deep within the womb of mother earth and are akin to birthmarks. These flaws are created due to irregular crystallization of diamond during its formation process.

Blemishes can be man-inflicted during mining, cutting & polishing or they may also have been acquired naturally.

One must understand clearly that diamonds are formed deep within the earth in the crudest of environments under unimaginable conditions of temperatures and pressures. These conditions are far removed from those of a sterile laboratory.

As a result, it is normal for diamonds to have inclusions. Inclusions are present in diamonds as a rule rather than as exceptions.

Nevertheless, inclusions need not be looked upon with distaste, if they are small and have a negligible effect on the brilliance and clarity of a diamond. In fact, the inclusions present in individual diamonds are as unique as the human fingerprint and are recorded in detail in the diamond’s gradation report.

Most inclusions do not affect the beauty of a diamond and are considered to be identifying characteristics. They allow you to properly identify your own diamond in case it happens to get lost or stolen or mixed up with other diamonds when given for cleaning or appraisal.

However, if the inclusions are too dense or widespread, they can affect the properties of the diamond in many ways:

Diamond Brilliance: An inclusion affects the diamond’s ability to scatter and transmit light as it obstructs the light passing through diamond. Consequently, it reduces the brilliance of diamond.

Durability: Inclusions can reduce the diamond’s resistance to fracture significantly.

Beauty: Sizeable inclusions or colored inclusions mar the beauty of the diamond.

Price: Value of the diamond decreases with increase in size and number of inclusions.

Some examples Internal Flaws or Inclusions found in diamonds are as under:

Feathers:

‘Feather’ is a general term for fissures that might exist in a diamond. They are hairline cracks within the stone that resemble (as the name suggests) feathers. Small feathers do not usually threaten the diamond’s structure unless they rise to the surface on the top of the stone, where they are particularly prone to accidental blows.

Depending on the direction from which they are viewed, a feather may look shiny and white, glossy, or transparent. Some feathers capture the incident light and blink from transparent to bright when the stone is moved to and fro.

Compared to any other inclusion, feathers present a greater durability threat to the diamond because a hard knock can enlarge them at any time. Ultrasonic cleaning can further pry open and expand the feathers.

Included crystals or minerals:

Diamonds can get permeated with tiny crystals and minerals because of the extreme conditions they have to undergo during the course of their formative years. Very often these crystals are smaller diamond particles inside a larger diamond. These foreign particles obstruct the play of incident light and thus detract from the clarity, grade and value of the diamond.

But, there are times when the naturally implanted crystal can have a positive impact and add character to a diamond. For example, a diamond with a small garnet embedded in it would be a great personal choice for someone whose birthstone is a garnet.

Knots:

Sometimes, an included diamond crystal sitting near the surface of the diamond reaches and opens to the surface during cutting and polishing and it is called a knot. It can give the diamond cutter lot of trouble while fashioning the diamond.

The knot is visible like a raised area on a facet. The boundary between the host diamond and the knot can be viewed under high magnification and proper lighting. You may also see the tell-tale trailing lines alongside the knot where tiny rubble of diamond had been inadvertently dragged across the surface by the polishing wheel.

Since the knot is an entirely different diamond crystal in itself, its growth pattern differs from that of the host diamond. Most of the times it is not feasible for the diamond cutter to polish the knot away.
Knots can greatly reduce the clarity and thus the value of a diamond.

Cavities:

Cavities are just what their name suggests. They are holes on the surface of the diamond. Cavities can be caused because of two reasons.

When a surface reaching crystal is forced out during polishing or if it simply drops out, it leaves behind a gaping hole called the cavity. Also, when a part of a feathering close to the diamond surface breaks off leaving behind a deep cleft-like opening, it is called a cavity. The tell-tale drag lines alongside the cavity where tiny rubble of diamond had been inadvertently dragged across the surface by the polishing wheel differentiate a cavity from a chip.

Cavities can crop up anywhere on a diamond, including the crown, pavilion or girdle. It can affect clarity just like an inclusion inside the diamond. But, a cavity has a more negative impact on the value of the stone since the cavity can turn dark with accumulated grime of everyday wear.

Twinning Wisps or Intergrowth:

The term Twinning Wisps or Intergrowth does not refer to a single inclusion but rather to a group of inclusions that have intertwined together in a twinning plane. This motley group consists of a mixture of inclusions such as pinpoint size diamond crystals, feathers, fractures, crystals, and clouds.

These are formed during the formative years of the stone when the diamond crystal is forming and growing. Typically, they are ribbon like bands stemming at the center of the diamond and look like white striping within the diamond similar to stretch marks on the belly skin of a pregnant woman.

Twinning wisps are more prevalent in fancy shape diamonds like heart shapes, pear shapes and triangles which are usually created from twinned crystals. Then again, twinning wisps can also be found in other diamond shapes too, based upon the quality of the rough diamond used to fashion out the stone.

Cleavage:

Cleavage is a straight crack in a diamond (with no feathering) in its cleavage plane. The cleavage plane is a weak crystal direction along one or more of the diamond’s four octahedral planes.

A cleavage can make the diamond more brittle as it has the potential to crack the stone into two pieces. However the minute unnoticeable cracks do not affect the diamond’s build directly and tiny cracks that are invisible in a table-up (face up) position do not seriously affect clarity ratings of the diamond.

Bearding or Bearded Girdle or Girdle Fringes:

As evident from the name, Bearded Girdle or Girdle Fringes are beard-like hair streaks that appear around the girdle of the diamond.

This type of inclusion consists of minute feathers stretching from the girdle surface into the stone and is a result of hastiness in the bruting process when giving the diamond its initial shape in the cutting process.

A thinly bearded girdle has very few and very fine feathers sprinkled around the diamond’s border and might not devaluate the diamond quality.

A thickly bearded girdle has a multitude of feathers that together create a fuzzy gray fringe all the way around the stone. It should be removed or refined away by cutting the diamond again.

Chip:

A chip is a shallow opening located on the surface of the diamond caused due to the chipping off or gouging out of a small piece of the diamond. The opening typically has a rounded outline and occurs on the edges of the girdle, culet or facet. (It should not be confused with the term “Diamond Chip” which refers to very small diamonds).

Since the chip is the result of damage that occurs subsequent to cutting and polishing, it will not be flanked by trailing drag lines

Usually, most chips are too tiny to be of any significance and can be eliminated from the diamond surface, by re-cutting or polishing the gem with negligible loss in carat weight. On the other hand, bigger chips may perhaps require re-cutting of the entire diamond causing substantial loss of diamond weight.

Dark Spot:

This is a thin, flat inclusion or a small crystal inclusion that reflects light like a mirror. The inclusion could also appear like a metallic silvery reflector.

Pinpoints:

Are tiny crystals that appear like whitish dots (occasionally they can also be dark in color) inside a diamond and are difficult to see. They look like tiny dots at 10X magnification.

At times, the minute pinpoints can bunch together in clusters giving a hazy look to that area called a cloud. A cloud can negatively impact a diamond’s clarity.

Clouds:

As stated above, clusters of minute pinpoints causing blurry cloud like areas in the diamond are called ‘Clouds’. They create an ugly spot in the diamond and depreciate its clarity rating and value.

Individually, the pinpoints may perhaps be too small to be distinguished at 10X magnification, but crowded together they seem like wispy white or gray patches. Some clouds look like a light haze, while others are dense and almost opaque.

Laser Lines

Unlike most other diamond inclusions laser lines are man-made rather than natural. When a laser beam is used to eliminate dark inclusions present in a diamond, the beams leave behind vapor like trails called the laser lines.

The marks look like filaments stretching inward from the diamond’s table and stopping at the point where the inclusion was removed.

Laser Drill Hole:

Laser treatment is frequently used nowadays to make the inclusions in a diamond less visible as also to improve the aesthetics of the stone.

The laser drill-hole is a tiny tunnel produced by a laser beam. The tunnel extends from the surface to a dark included crystal (or to the spot from where such a crystal has been removed). After drilling, Sulfuric acid is introduced into the drill hole by immersing the diamond in the acid to dissolve or bleach the inclusion and make it less visible.

The fine bore holes are easily detectable under microscopic examination. They are whitish and straight, but may also change direction slightly. They are often described as having a ‘wrinkled’ appearance. In reflected light, the surface reaching holes can be spotted as dark circles opening through the diamond’s facets.

The Gemological Institute of America grades laser drilled diamonds since the holes are permanent features and the drilling aspect is noted under the comments section.

Growth or Grain Lines:

It is common knowledge that the metamorphosis of carbon into diamonds occurs in conditions that are far from ideal or sterile. Grain lines are created by irregular crystallization that takes place when a diamond is forming.

These can only be observed while slowly rotating the diamond under examination. They appear and disappear instantaneously and usually appear as groups.

Colorless grain lines do not usually affect diamond clarity unless they are present in large masses and can be seen from the crown side of the diamond.

Internal Graining

Internal graining is also caused by uneven crystal growth and can appear like lines, angles, or curves. It can be colored, whitish, or reflective. Internal graining can give part or all of the stone a hazy texture.

Fracture Filled

Surface reaching feathers and Laser drill holes are sometimes filled with substances like molten glass in a treatment called fracture filling. The filler makes the flaw less evident.

It can be difficult to detect, but the treatment leaves a telltale sign called the flash effect. It refers to the bright flashes of color seen when a fracture-filled diamond is rotated. The colors of these flashes range from electric blue or purple to orange or yellow, depending on lighting conditions. The flashes are best seen with the field of vision just about parallel to the plane of the filled fracture.

The Gemological Institute of America does not grade fracture filled diamonds because the treatment is not permanent.

Bruise

A bruise is a tiny area of impact (minor chip or concussion on the stone) surrounded by small root-like feathers visible at 10X magnification. When viewed through an opposing facet, a bruise appears cottony in texture as it radiates into the diamond.

A bruise is sometimes called a percussion mark and is caused by a hard blow.

The presence of a tiny bruise can make the difference between an IF and a VVS1 grade.

Green diamonds do occur naturally though most people are not aware of their existence. However, simultaneous existence of all the environmental conditions necessary for formation of green diamonds is virtually impossible. As such, green diamonds are extremely rare and extraordinarily valuable.

On the scale of rarity of natural color diamonds, green diamonds are second only to red (or pink) diamonds and probably share this second place with blue diamonds.

We all know that diamonds take birth deep inside the womb of mother earth (at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 120 mi) in the Earth mantle) when excessively high temperatures and insanely intense pressures act on the carbon that happens to be present at such great depths. This continues over the course of hundreds of thousands of years and ultimately crystallizes the carbon into a diamond.

When perfectly colorless natural diamonds get exposed to a source of radioactivity during their formative years over a prolonged period of time (millions of years or even longer) some diamonds acquire a green color. Green diamonds of such type are truly unique.

Mostly, such radiation comes in the form of alpha and beta particles emitted by underground uranium compounds or by seeping groundwater. The penetration of green color imparted by this radiation is not very deep and is often lost during the fashioning of the stone. Expert cutters leave a ‘skin’ or staining of surface radiation on the stone giving the stone a greener appearance.

Since the GIA grades color on face up appearance and since the skin occurs naturally there is little clue as to how the stone appears green.

You should view the diamond loose and check how much of the stone is in the rough form (Lesser the better). Green diamonds with the same GIA grades can vary greatly in value on account of the green ‘skin’. This should not daunt a collector from buying a skin stone as a natural green diamond is exceptionally rare in any form.

Less often, gamma rays from radioactive sources shower the diamond and impart the green color deeper into the diamond. In rarest of rare cases the entire gemstone is turned green.

The size of the gemstone, the strength of radioactivity, the length of time of exposure to radioactivity along with the type of radiation (as brought out above) are the factors governing the intensity and depth of the green color acquired by a natural green diamond.

Like all natural colored diamonds, natural green diamonds too exhibit more than one spectral hue. The predominant green color is accompanied by modifiers which are one or more additional colors that contribute to its overall impression. There are many combinations of modifying colors contributing to a green diamond’s final appearance & they factor in determining its final per-carat price.

Modifiers colors of green diamonds include brown, yellow, gray and blue. As a result, Yellowish-Green, Yellow-Green, Bluish-Green, Blue-Green, Grayish-Green, Gray-Green, and even Gray-Yellowish-Green diamonds also occur in nature.

Brown and Gray modifiers greatly reduce the value of a stone. Yellow as a modifier too devalues a diamond but in some cases it can create vibrant colors.

Blue as a modifier is the most valuable. Bluish-Greens, Blue-Greens, Green-Blues, and Greenish-Blues are even rarer and these diamonds are at times even more highly valued than pure greens.

Pure green colored diamonds without any trace of secondary color modifiers are highly valued and greatly admired in the diamond and jewelry industry.

Most Famous Green Diamond:

The Dresden Green Diamond, more famously known as ‘Dresden Green’, is the most famous green diamond on earth. It is a 41 carats (8.2 g) natural green diamond. The diamond probably weighed over 100 carats (old carat) in its rough form and came from the Kollur mine in the state of Andhra Pradesh in the India.

The diamond has been named after Dresden, capital of Saxony, Germany where it has been on display for the last two hundred years.

Earliest record pertaining to The Dresden Green can be seen in issue dated October 25th – 27th, 1722 of ‘The Post Boy’, a London new-sheet of the 1700′s which reads as follows:

“On Tuesday last, in the afternoon, one Mr. Marcus Moses, lately arrived from India, had the honor to wait on his Majesty [King George I (ruled 1714-27)] with his large diamond, which is of a fine emerald green colour, and was with his Majesty near an hour. His Majesty was very much pleased with the sight thereof. It is said there never was seen the like in Europe before, being free from any defect in the world; and he has shown his Majesty several other fine large diamonds, the like of which ’tis said were never brought from India before. He was also, the 25th, to wait on their Royal Highnesses with his large diamond; and they were surprised to see one of such largeness, and of such a fine emerald color without the help of a foil under it. We hear the gentlemen values it at £10,000.”

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) examined the stone in 1988.

The Dresden Green Diamond found to be of extraordinary quality, and a rare type IIa diamond.

The clarity grade established by GIA was VS1 and the gem has the potential of being internally flawless.

The gem measures 29.75 x 19.88 x 10.29mm. The GIA graded the symmetry good and the polish very good. This is astonishing for a diamond cut prior to 1741.

The Dresden Greed Diamond is displayed Albertinium Museum in Dresden.
